Dangerous Fishing: a penguin ice-fishing above an underwater world of fish and sharks

Overview

A 2D fishing game written in pure Java and Swing during my first year of Computer Science. The player catches fish while avoiding sharks and puffer fish, which appear more often as the score rises, across levels with lives, bonus fish and a saved high-score table.

What I built

  1. A class hierarchy with an abstract Enemy base for sharks and puffer fish, and a BonusFish that extends Fish.
  2. A game loop on a background thread that moves every entity, checks for hits and repaints the Swing panel.
  3. Keyboard controls through a custom KeyListener, and instructions and options screens built on a shared abstract panel.
  4. High scores saved to and loaded from a file with Java file I/O.
